Prosser History

Unlike the Prosser that the people of the state of Washington have come to know and love today, the city has not always been home to the wine industry. For a long time prior to the great depression, it was believed that the area of Prosser would be a good source of natural gas and oil. It was around the time of the great depression that people finally gave up, after realizing that after years of trying, there were still no great finds. It was not until the year 1919 that Washington State College, more recently known as Washington State University, created an Irrigation Experiment Station in Prosser. This led the way for the communities many agriculturalists, farmers, and viticulturists. 

What is the City Like?

Home to more than 5000 people, the city of Prosser is an extremely popular choice for people working in the wine industry. The city has become known not only for its excellent vineyards, and wineries but for the many events and other attractions that it holds annually. Some of the most popular and well-known include, The Great Prosser Balloon Rally, and the Prosser Wine and Food Fair. While the primary industry within Prosser is winery and viticulture, the city is a popular choice for families too. Many of its annual events are catered to families, and are held in various parts of the wonderfully landscaped greenspace, and parks that make up much of the area.

Like many surrounding areas, the city of Prosser is home to a wide range of real estate. With prices starting at approximately $50,000 certain properties can sell for over $1 million dollars. The Prosser School District

The Prosser School District is home to approximately six schools. The majority of these schools are fairly well-known in the area for the academic accolades, and well-rounded student life. These schools include Keene-Riverview Elementary school, which welcomes more than 450 students between kindergarten and grade 2 through its doors every day; and Prosser High School, this school welcomes just under 1000 students between the grades 9-12.

The primary industry within the city of Prosser is the wine industry and viticulture. With excellent land for agriculture, the city is a popular choice for any professional of that nature. Currently, the city is experiencing a real estate boom with properties selling fast, and many industry professionals looking to buy land in what is considered to be the heart of the Washington Wine Industry.
